Press Release
Pie In The Skyä Excites and Treats Children of Manos de Amor in Bucerias to a Tour and Cake Decorating Experience in celebration of Halloween and Day of the Dead.
Pie in The Skyä suspended its normal operations today to delight the children of Manos de Amor A.C. to a Day in the Life of a pastelero.
At 9:30 a.m. a truck driven by director, Veronica Gomez Garcia arrived full of 12 children, five helper/interns from Norway, and two Ayudantes from Manos De Amor , eager to learn what goes on at Pie In The Skyä.
The children jumped off the truck and were greeted by the staff of Pie In The Skyä, headed by Susan Drexler , Director, and accompanied by, Executive Chef, Manuela Garza, Artisan Cake Decorator Zulem Angel Mendoza, Kitchen Manager, Carmina Izazaga Herrera and kitchen ayudante Maria de Lourdes Ayala along with the administrative staff.
The children began their tour of the bakery by learning what we produce, what happens in each area of work, from where the cakes begin as mixes, to where they end up as final products.
They began their decorating experience by washing their hands, learning why cleanliness is important, and then they put on their uniforms for the day.
The children chose from 3 different cupcake designs, and joined small groups to learn how to create their own cupcake modeled after the 3 examples given them.
Each group was shown by example how to make the various parts of the faces on the designs, They proceeded to practice, eyes, lips, brows, teeth and hair on a cake base provided them. With much enthusiasm, gratitude, pride, and big smiles they licked the frosting off their practice plates and fingers while they waited to decorate their final project. With the help of their teachers and helpers they each produced their own Halloween cupcake with the best part yet to come- eating their creations. Most of the children wanted to save some to take back home to share with others. Smacking their lips with a little bit of milk, their experience as decorators was coming to an end, but not without leaving their mark on Pie In The Skyä
Thanking the staff of Pie In The Skyä, with big affectionate smiles and happy eyes, they took photographs and went on their way.
Pie In The Skyä returned to normalcy close to noon. The children left to attend their afternoon school classes, but not before winning over the hearts and minds of the staff at Pie In The Skyä.
This won’t be their last visit. We intend to do more with Manos de Amor in Bucerias. Their energy was contagious. They were so appreciative of what little we were able to do to make life a little happier during this Halloween week.
As a result of our experience today, we intend to continue our relationship with these loving children by providing something special for each of them on their birthdays, hoping to sweeten what must be some difficult days. We want to make a difference in their lives. If we can make their birthday just a little bit more exciting and fun, we will have been rewarded. The Children of Manos de Amor in Bucerias have captured our hearts and for that we thank them.
The employees of Pie In The SKyä donated at least 2 hours of their work day today to the Children of Manos de Amor and for that we thank them.
